BHAS - Keynsham Abbey Working Group
Full Description of Organisation
Bristol History & Archaeology Society ("BHAS") was originally formed as Bristol Folk House Archaeological Club in the 1950s by members of classes with an interest in archaeology and history. The Club combined practical archaeology sessions with visits to places of interest and talks on related topics.
BHAS continues to arrange events fo those with an interest in history and archaeology by hosting talks by a variety of guest lecturers with historical or archaeological themes. In adition BHAS manages the historic remains of Keynsham Abbey (the archaeological excavation of which BHAS was formerly involved in). We carry out routine maintenance of the Abbey remains, which are now laid out as gardens using medieval planting wherever possible. We meet fortnightly for gardening and maintenance sessions as well as holding open days and arranging talks, guided tours and educational events relating to Keynsham Abbey. BHAS - Keynsham Abbey Working Group's aim is to promote knowledge and understanding of Keynsham Abbey's history and archaeology and to care for and preserve the Abbey remains and the artefacts associated with it.
BHAS is run entirely by volunteers headed by a Chair and Committee who are elected from its membership.
