- There is still time to complete Census 2021
Sunday March 21 marked the day that millions of people across England and Wales completed key questions about themselves and their households to ensure local services in every community are informed by the best information possible. However, for those who have not yet submitted their online or paper questionnaires or have maybe misplaced their invitation letter, there is lots of help available. “The information you provide needs to be about who usually lives in your household on Census Day, which was Sunday March 21, however if you’ve haven’t completed it yet, please do so – there’s still time to,” the Office for National Statistics’ deputy national statistician Iain Bell said.“Every household should have received their letter inviting them to take part and we’ve had a great response so far. If you haven't, or you have misplaced your letter, you can head online to www.census.gov.uk and request a new unique access code. “There is plenty of help available, including face-to-face assistance at local Census Support Centres.“Field officers will soon start calling at households who have not completed their census. They will follow social distancing and COVID-safe guidelines, supporting people to take part.“They will be equipped with PPE and will never need to enter anyone’s home. They’ll be operating much like a postal or food delivery visit.” The results from the census will shed light on the needs of different groups and communities, and the inequalities people are experiencing, ensuring the big decisions facing the country following the pandemic and EU exit are based on the best information possible, through the anonymised answers provided. The ONS will never share personal details and no-one, including government bodies, will be able to identify you in census statistics. Personal census records will be kept secure for 100 years, and only then can future generations view it. If people do not complete their census, they may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000. For more information, including how to find a local census support centre, please visit: www.census.gov.uk.

- Bath Spa Works: Internships
Message from Bath Spa University: In 2020 Bath Spa University launched the Virtual Internship scheme (VIS) which saw some of their talented students participate in paid work experience in a variety of engaging roles with local employers. This invaluable experience has no doubt assisted them in their professional development and I want to thank every employer who has participated over the last 12 months. We developed VIS in response to Covid-19 and just over a year on a lot has changed. One thing is certain though - our students will continually need to adapt to an ever changing job market with an ever increasing role for home/remote working. Due to the success of our Autumn/Winter Virtual Internship Scheme (VIS), we have widened our placement offering. Introducing Bath Spa Works, developed and coordinated by the University’s Careers and Employability department, Bath Spa Works provides employers access to key initiatives that have been cultivated to address the developmental needs of our students and the business needs of our organisations. Bath Spa Works: Internships offer more flexibility than previously on offer through VIS. You can apply for a fully funded opportunity of up to 50 hours or a match funded opportunity from 2-10 weeks. Fully funded opportunities are prioritised for charity/third sector organisations If you would like to get involved with Bath Spa Works: Internships then please complete this project proposal form. Give as much detail as you can as this will help us when we shortlist. If your proposal is accepted we will contact you shortly after with next steps such as advert posting date, closing date and shortlist/interview timescales. Myself and the team are genuinely looking forward to reading your proposals and if you would like to discuss anything further please get in touch. - Shine a light on the stars in your community
Community heroes in Bath and North East Somerset who have made an exceptional contribution to helping others during the Covid-19 pandemic are set to be recognised in a raft of special new awards. The Shining Light Awards aim to highlight people who have gone above and beyond to volunteer or to support members of their community over the past year. Nominations are now open for the ten awards for volunteers, carers, charities, businesses, nurses, teachers, public sector workers, and anyone who has exceeded what is expected of them in order to help their local community or an individual over the past 12 months. The Shining Light Awards are organised by Bath & North East Somerset Council in partnership with BSW CCG, BANES Virgin Care, Curo, Student Community Partnership (University of Bath, Bath Spa University & Bath College), and the 3SG. The annual Community Awards are on hold until 2021/22 so that people who have supported others through the pandemic can be given recognition through these special awards this year. Councillor Andy Furse, council Chair, said: “Over the past year I have found it staggering to witness many extraordinary acts of kindness and support by people in Bath and North East Somerset to those in need. We have always known there are true heroes in our community, but the challenges posed by the pandemic have highlighted these exceptional people more than ever before. It’s really brought out the best in our communities. “It’s especially important this year that we ‘shine a light’ on these individuals and groups and so I encourage everyone to think about whether they know someone who deserves to be honoured by one of these special awards. Perhaps you know someone who has made sure a vulnerable person feels less alone by providing emotional support, or a business who has provided services for free to volunteers. We want to hear about all these heroes, big or small, who have found creative ways to look after others.” Ruth Atkins, Head of Public Engagement and Insights for NHS Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group said: “The past 12 months have been unprecedented and the awards will provide an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work individuals, teams and organisations across B&NES have achieved. BSW CCG welcomes working in partnership with the Council and other organisations to deliver these awards.” Jo Scammell, Head of Commissioning and Wellbeing at Virgin Care said: “We are delighted to be part of the Awards again this year. We have been amazed by the community response during the pandemic and how compassionate the residents of Bath and North East Somerset are. This is a great opportunity to hear more about all these incredibly kind and generous people.” Ghika Savva, Community Liaison Co-ordinator from the Student Community Partnership said: “All of us in the Student Community Partnership have been touched to hear stories of residents and students coming together to support each other during lockdown – these acts of kindness have helped us all through the past year. We are looking forward to celebrating the local heroes that make this community such a special place.” James Carlin, Director of 3SG said: "It's been incredible to see thousands of people coming forward to help each other during the last 12 months. We'd encourage you to Shine A Light on all the unsung heroes that have made a huge difference to the lives of people in Bath and North East Somerset." Tom Box, Resident Engagement Manager at housing association Curo, said: “It’s been an incredibly tough year but at Curo we’ve seen residents and communities do extraordinary things to support each other time and time again. We look forward to helping to celebrate our COVID heroes through these awards.” Nominations will be considered by a panel made up of the partner organisations. There will be an online awards evening in May. Winners will receive a certificate of recognition and a Bath Aqua Glass Award. Nominations are encouraged to be made online via the nomination form before April 30. Anyone unable to complete their nomination online can download a form from the council website, email connecting_communities@bathnes.gov.uk or call 01225 477807. All nominations must demonstrate that the nominee - has provided support to the local community or an individual during the past 12 months of the Covid-19 pandemic. - in addition to their normal work or volunteering, they made a significant difference to the lives of the community or an individual that they have supported during the past year. - is supported, recognised and respected by the local community and the people who benefit from it. - benefits residents of Bath and North East Somerset. Find out more at the Awards webpage It is important to also highlight and celebrate the winners of last year’s Community Awards. - New director of public health for Bath and North East Somerset
A new director of public health has been appointed by Bath & North East Somerset Council ahead of the retirement of the present director, Dr Bruce Laurence. Becky Reynolds, who has worked as a consultant in the council’s public health team since 2013, will take over the role next week. Bruce has been the director of public health in B&NES since 2013 and has worked closely with Becky on the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Directors of public health are responsible for determining the overall vision and objectives for public health in a local area. They are accountable for delivering public health objectives and reporting annually on the outcomes and future work. They may be from any background but must be qualified specialists in public health. Becky Reynolds said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed to this role and to help tackle some of the challenges faced by our communities in Bath and North East Somerset, especially at this important time during Covid-19. I have a strong interest for improving health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities. “My immediate focus is to do all I can with colleagues across the council, the wider health sector and the voluntary sector to help our area recover from the pandemic and improve health and wellbeing. Councillor Dine Romero, council Leader, said: “It’s great news that we have appointed Becky to lead on protecting and improving the long-term health of all our residents. Throughout her time with the public health team and working closely with Bruce, she has proven her excellent abilities – never more so than during the considerable pressure of the pandemic. “I would like to wholeheartedly thank Bruce for his exemplary and outstanding leadership of public health in B&NES. He has done an incredible job in working tirelessly on the Covid response for the benefit of everyone in our communities. I wish him the very best for the future.” Dr Bruce Laurence said: “I have been with B&NES since June 2013, just after the public health team moved across to the council from the NHS. In that time I have had the privilege of seeing the council wholeheartedly embrace and support our team and our agenda, and provide us with a happy and productive home. Almost every service in the council contributes in some way to residents’ health and wellbeing, and to build further on the huge potential that provides, we have also worked closely with the local NHS and a host of other networks and organisations. Although these years have been challenging ones for local government, I firmly believe that a local authority is the best home for a locality public health team. “I am incredibly pleased that Becky is to be my successor. I recruited her just months after I arrived, and she quickly emerged as a great team player and a natural leader, and so I leave fully confident that our small but extremely talented team will remain strong and united and that our work will go from strength to even greater strength.” Becky Reynolds previously worked in public health in West Yorkshire. Her career has included roles in the NHS, local and national government and building partnerships to improve people’s health and wellbeing. She has led and contributed to health improvement programmes including tobacco control, teenage pregnancy, healthy schools, HIV prevention, and screening and immunisation. - Free school meals vouchers for Easter
Families whose children are eligible for free school meals will be provided with supermarket vouchers worth £40 to cover the upcoming Easter school holidays by Bath & North East Somerset Council. From tomorrow (March 26) eligible families who received vouchers from the council’s free school meals scheme during the February holidays will automatically receive an email. Once they confirm they would like a £40 voucher per child, a further email will be sent containing the supermarket voucher codes. New applications from families who haven’t claimed the vouchers before can be made online via this page from tomorrow afternoon (March 26). Families who received the vouchers in February should not reapply as it could cause a delay in them receiving their vouchers. In February, the council issued 3,958 vouchers to families in B&NES. The electronic vouchers can be spent in a range of supermarkets and are available to the families of pupils entitled to benefit-related free school meals, as well as parents who receive free childcare for two-year-olds. The scheme is part of a wide range of community support for vulnerable families including FOOD clubs, food banks, welfare and financial support. Councillor Kevin Guy, cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “I’m delighted that once again we’re able to support families with this scheme over the Easter holidays. Many families are struggling with various financial pressures due to the pandemic, so I hope this eases at least one burden and will allow them to enjoy family time together without worrying how they will put food on the table.” The scheme is funded from the Government’s Covid Winter Grant Scheme. There are currently more than 4,000 children in Bath and North East Somerset who receive benefit-related free school meals. 3SG and St John’s Foundation have already allocated £55,000 from a local fundraising appeal to community-led food projects serving communities of high-need across Bath and North East Somerset. There is also community support for families: - Anyone finding it hard to stay afloat on their food budget can contact their nearest FOOD Club or Pantry for an affordable way to supplement a weekly shop. - Remembering Together: Those who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic
People across Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire whose loved ones have died during the coronavirus pandemic are being invited to join an online community service of remembrance. The Community Remembering Together Service will be broadcast on Wednesday 24 March at 7pm via the Bath Abbey YouTube channel and will be available here: www.youtube.com/channel/UCSTBxSCyS70_S_ZiPd-DANA The event is a collaboration between local health care organisations and faith leaders to offer readings, poetry and music to remember those who have died because of the pandemic. It is organised jointly by the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, Dorothy House Hospice Care, Bath Abbey, SWALLOW Charity and Bath and North East Somerset Council. You can read more and see the order of service on the RUH website by clicking here. RUH Lead Chaplain, the Reverend Narinder Tegally, said: "The service is intended to bring together those within the local community, who follow a professed faith or no faith, to remember all those who have died across Bath and North East Somerset, Wiltshire and Somerset at the RUH, at Dorothy House, in our local care homes and at home since the virus first arrived last year. "As places of worship are currently closed for communal acts of devotion, the service will be pre-recorded and offered online. Not only is this an opportunity for people to remember those who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is also a way for the wider community to be together, to grieve together and support all in the local community who have had their lives significantly changed by it." The Community Remembering Together Service will include: An address by The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton Personal stories from two bereaved families Reading from Wayne De Leeuw, CEO of Dorothy House Hospice Care Prayers, readings and poetry offered from different faith traditions and none During this service, people will be invited to light a candle at home Music by the RUH musician in residence, and Christchurch and Bath Abbey Choirs Closing words from Cara Charles Barks MBE, CEO of the RUH Bath Song by SWALLOW - South West Action for Learning and Living Our Way Supporting people with learning disabilities This time of remembrance will offer a central act of devotion and remembrance for all. It will focus upon the lighting of candles as a sign of hope and renewal as well as a time of celebrating the lives of those who have died and also giving thanks for all who have cared for them. The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton, said: "This time last year we'd only just heard of Covid-19. Now, a year on, it's totally turned our lives upside down, taking away so many things we'd previously taken for granted, but above all, taking away many people who are dear to us and our communities. It's been made so much more difficult by us not being able to have proper funeral services. So many people have not been able to gather together with family and friends to say goodbye as they would have wished. Our hope is that the Remembering Together Service will provide some of that solace and sharing in loss that is part of bereavement." Imam Dr Mohammed Gamal Abdelnour, Imam of Bath Mosque, said: "Offering condolences and sharing in grief with the family and friends of the deceased are considered valued acts of charity in Islam. However, coronavirus has largely changed the way we grieve, the way we honour the demise of our loved ones, and also the way we express our condolences. All these manifestations doubled our grief and added salt to our wounds. Believing in God's ultimate mercy and mysterious wisdom, I pray that the Remembering Together Service will help heal our griefs and revitalize the sense of togetherness that we have missed since the virus began Amin." Bath MP Wera Hobhouse said: "The pandemic has been a great challenge in our lives, and this is especially true for those who have lost loved ones. In addition to this, I know that many in our community are missing the chance to worship communally and draw comfort from being together. I am pleased to welcome news of this event, which will help to bring peace and comfort to those who have suffered the most." Cllr Dine Romero, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: "As we approach the first anniversary since the first death from coronavirus in the UK, it's only fitting that we should come together to remember those we have lost. Anyone who have been affected by the devastating effects of this terrible virus should join us and light a candle and remember loved ones. This is an anniversary that no-one wanted, but if we keep working together and doing the right things, we will drive the numbers down and get through these dark times."

- New Bath River Line project to create a linear park for walking and cycling
A linear riverside park that will connect Bath’s green spaces with the city via a new walking and cycling route is set to be created by Bath & North East Somerset Council. The Bath River Line project has been launched to develop a landscape masterplan for the park, which will follow a 10km stretch of the River Avon from Batheaston to Newbridge. The park aims to reveal lesser-known parts of the river, connect communities and create a high-quality route for walking and cycling, encouraging more people to explore the city in a sustainable way. Wildlife found along the river will be celebrated and protected by having their habitats improved. The park will also provide areas where people can stop and enjoy the landscape, play spaces for children and spaces to celebrate the art and heritage of Bath. The council is asking residents to visit the new Bath River Line website which features an interactive map, where people can share what they like and don’t like about the proposed route and submit their memories and photographs of the river. Comments are invited before April 16 and will help inform the final design of the scheme. In early summer, there will be a consultation on the final design and residents will be invited to have their say before a funding bid is made to the West of England Combined Authority in the autumn. Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “Bath River Line is an exciting project that will revitalise the riverside and help tackle the climate emergency by encouraging more walking and cycling. It will celebrate and protect nature as well as our city’s heritage. We hope residents and visitors to Bath will discover on foot or by bike parts of the landscape they’ve never enjoyed before. “To help get the final design right before our public consultation later this year, we would like to hear from you about how you use the area now and what you want to see there in the future. Please have a look at the interactive map and share your views.” The idea for Bath River Line came from the WaterSpace Project, a collaboration between Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Canal and Rivers Trust, the Environment Agency and Wessex Water. Published in 2017, the WaterSpace Study identified a series of projects to revitalise the River Avon and Kennet & Avon Canal waterways for people and nature. The River of Avon Park eventually became the Bath River Line: a linear riverside park for Bath. For more information on the WaterSpace Project and to read the original study, please click here.
