- Bath Mind launches new service: Breathing Space
Bath Mind is delighted to announce the launch of their new Breathing Space service to the B&NES community. The Breathing Space will support people within the B&NES community who are at the point of mental health distress or crisis. The service launches on 13th April, and will be open 365 evenings a year, from 5.30-11.30pm. Due to coronavirus, this service will initially operate as a telephone support, returning to a face-to-face service from a central Bath location, when the coronavirus crisis is over. Paul Cooper, Head of Services at Bath Mind, for a long time our local community have made clear the need for a non-clinical service to be available in the evenings for people struggling with their mental health. The Breathing Space will be able to provide ‘phone support in the immediate term, and longer term face to face support within a safe space. We will ensure everyone has a follow up plan and strategies to manage their wellbeing. We believe this service will make a real impact to people’s lives and will improve mental health provision, offering a non-clinical alternative to A&E and out of hours’ services. Bath Mind is a local, independent charity; we put people at the heart of everything we do. To donate, or find out more visit www.bathmind.org.uk

- Chancellor's support
Yesterday the chancellor announced a package of support for charities. It’s an important start, but NCVO will be pressing the government needs to go further. What’s in the package? A total of £750m in new funding was announced for charities responding to the crisis in the UK. £370m will go to small and medium-sized charities, channelled through the National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) and other organisations. It will support locally-focused charities doing most during the outbreak. Another £360m will be allocated to charities providing essential services and supporting people during the crisis. Some is specifically earmarked for hospices, St John Ambulance to support the NHS and Citizens Advice to allow more staff to provide advice. Children’s charities and victims’ charities were also mentioned. The government will also match public donations to the BBC’s Big Night In charity appeal, with a minimum donation of £20m to the National Emergencies Trust. With charity shops shut and fundraising events cancelled, NCVO estimate charities stand to lose around £4bn in 12 weeks as a result of the crisis. This is an important start, but we know it won’t be enough to prevent good charities around the country from closing their doors. Even many that survive will look very different in a few months’ time, with a severely reduced capacity to provide the support that people rely on.

- Minor Injury Units to temporarily close
Minor Injury Units (MIUs) at Paulton Hospital, Chippenham Community Hospital and Trowbridge Community Hospital will close temporarily from 5pm on Wednesday 8 April 2020 so staff can be redeployed to provide vital additional capacity elsewhere in the local area. All three MIUs have seen a decline in the number of patients attending since the start of the COVID-19 crisis with patient numbers at Paulton MIU dropping by 75 per cent and attendance at Chippenham and Trowbridge experiencing a similar decline. Staff employed at the units will be redeployed to help look after patients across the local health and care system. Given the recently low attendance, the temporary closures are not expected to present problems for local people and the units will reopen when circumstances permit. Patients with minor injuries should visit the NHS 111 online service. This will provide advice on where to go for the best care for their symptoms. People should only phone 111 if they cannot access the 111 online service. Those patients who feel that they need a GP appointment should call their local GP practice and are likely to be offered a phone or video consultation in the first instance, unless a face-to-face appointment is absolutely necessary. No-one with COVID-19 symptoms should attend any medical setting unless explicitly directed to do by the NHS 111 service or a 999 call operator. Of course, if you feel your symptoms genuinely require emergency treatment, you should always seek help from your nearest hospital. Douglas Blair, Managing Director of Wiltshire Health and Care, which runs the MIUs in Chippenham and Trowbridge, said: “As the local health and care system faces up to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis, our top priority is to focus on caring for the sickest patients in our community. “In order to do this, we have to constantly review our services with the aim of ensuring that as many frontline clinical staff as possible are available to provide care for those who need it most. Clinical Chair: Dr Andrew Girdher | Chief Executive Officer: Tracey Cox “As a result, we have taken the decision to temporarily close our MIUs in Chippenham and Trowbridge so we can more usefully redeploy our staff to where they can help as many people as possible.” Kirsty Mathews, Managing Director of Virgin Care in Bath and North East Somerset, which runs the MIU at Paulton Hospital said: “Over recent weeks we have seen a far smaller number of patients attending our MIU as local people increasingly follow self-care advice and seek help from the online 111 service. “This reduction in demand means we are able to redeploy our hard working and highly skilled staff so they can help patients in other health and care settings.” Tracey Cox, Chief Executive of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (BSW CCGs) said: “I would like to assure local people that the closures of these MIUs have been put in place as a temporary measure and will be reviewed on an ongoing basis with a view to reopening the units as soon as it is feasible and sustainable for us to do so. “The NHS and its partners across BaNES, Swindon and Wiltshire are working together to ensure the services we provide have the resources and resilience they need to deal with the problems posed by COVID-19.”

- Merger of CCG's
Sent on behalf of Tracey Cox and Dr Andrew Girdher: Merger of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Groups "These are extremely challenging times for everyone involved in health and care across BaNES, Swindon and Wiltshire and we would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks for all of the work everybody is involved in during our ongoing battle against coronavirus. Because of the enormous pace and scale of work taking place, it may have slipped your mind that today – Wednesday 1st April – marks the date that our three clinical commissioning groups of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire formally come together as a single organisation. We had hoped the announcement of our merger would have been a moment of celebration but, out of respect for what is happening here and across the country, it is instead a time to prove that this joining-of-forces can bring much-needed resilience, leadership and, above all else, practical, on-the-ground support to those going above and beyond to tackle the coronavirus outbreak. Merging the three single CCGs not only enables us to become more efficient in how we plan and deliver local healthcare, but also ensures we have the key players from all areas of local healthcare around the same table making decisions quickly, strategically and in the best interest of our population. One of the ways we are marking our merger today is through the launch of a new BSW CCG website at www.bswccg.nhs.uk. This new resource contains a great deal of valuable information, including up to date news which you will find useful as we continue to deal with the challenges posed by coronavirus. We will keep you informed about how our newly-merged organisation is developing over the coming month. If you have any questions, please send them to BSWCCG.communications@nhs.net. Please also share this e-mail with your wider networks. In the meantime we would like to thank you once again for your ongoing support."

- Volunteering FAQs for Covid-19
Here is a list of handy FAQs (Keep checking back here as we'll be updating them regularly). How do I register as a Compassionate Community volunteer? We have registered over 2500! Volunteers and we are so grateful to the community. We are pausing recruitment to allow us to find opportunities for everyone. What if I can't volunteer anymore? If you can no longer volunteer or what you can do has changed then that fine. Please email us at contact@3sg.org.uk and we’ll make sure that we update your preferences as soon as we possibly can. I've signed up as a volunteer, what happens next? If you have volunteered to be a Street Champion (support for people with shopping and medicine collections) then we will be in touch as soon as someone in your area requests support through the support line. If you have volunteered to be a Befriender (support for those who are isolated and would like some virtual company) then we will be in touch when someone contacts us with a befriending request. You will need to sign the volunteer handbook and send us a copy of your photo ID before you can complete an assignment. What ID do you require? We ask that you submit a copy of your photo ID (passport, driving licence etc) Should I print out the volunteer handbook? As the handbook is working document linked to a number of other regularly updated websites and documents it is designed to be read online. How do I pay for shopping? We would request that you do not share bank details. We have an expenses process in place that we will share with you if/when you are asked assigned a Street Champion task. The Process · The amount of the shopping should be under £30 · 3SG assign a Street Champion · Street Champion contacts person requiring support and arranges the shopping. Volunteer buys food with their own money and obtains a separate receipt Street Champion competes the feedback form online and uploads their receipt and submits BEFORE dropping food off with person in need · Volunteer leaves receipt in the bags for the person in need · 3SG reimburses volunteer the same day · 3SG then contacts the service user for payment Why do I need to pick up medicine rather than it being delivered? At the moment the pharmacies are prioritising strong medicine in regards to deliveries and repeat prescriptions etc are being supported under this scheme. I haven't been given anything to do yet? That's ok we will be getting back to you as soon as something comes up that you can help with. Make sure you have followed the next steps such as signing the handbook and sending across your ID. Keep an eye on our newsletter that goes out regularly as there are often opportunities in there. What time commitment do you require? We do not ask for a specific time commitment. We understand that everyone's circumstances differ and that we are in a rapidly changing landscape so all we ask is that if you do commit to helping someone when we call that you see through that commitment. If you can't help when we call then just let the team know and they'll move on to someone else. Why do you specify that we go out in pairs at night? You may have noticed that we ask that our volunteers go out at night in pairs. We understand that this may not be practical for everyone and in such cases, we would ask that you try to limit your Compassionate Community activities to daylight hours. This is not only to ensure your safety (which is paramount) but also to ensure that we do not compromise our insurance provisions as this would mean that we could not continue to provide this vital service within our community. In order to adhere to current Government guidelines. volunteers working in pairs must be living in the same household. Can I continue to shop for someone? Yes you can continue to help someone but we would request that you do not arrange your own payment with the Service User. Each shop needs to come back through us for a number of reasons which protect you as well as the person you are helping. We have a reimbursement process in place below. If you have started to do this please ensure that you revert back to the system you signed up to otherwise we will have to remove you as a volunteer. Also it is very important to check with us before each shop to ensure their bill has been cleared before the next shop, this helps to manage the persons finances. Please text 07903734610 to check this position. We would also advise that you proactively check with the person you are helping if they need anything when you are going to the supermarkets to avoid unnecessary trips.

A message from our Founding Director, Betsy de Thierry Please support us by donating We are running a challenge aimed at being fun and if anyone can donate to us that would be great. Like all charities at the moment we are taking a hit. We are trying to find other ways to raise money but also keep people fit and mentally healthy. With our Great Community Virtual Challenge, you just have to tag any exercise miles you do to me, or our social media channels and I will add to community tally and use them to travel virtually to Bath's 4 twinned cities. So far we have traveled the distance from Bath to Harwich, 180 miles. We have a comfort box (hamper) to send to a needy recipient and hope that one of our participants will help us choose where it goes. For more info, please see http://mentoringplus.net/the-great-community-virtual-challenge/ At this time of national emergency, Marie Curie Nurses and frontline staff are needed more than ever as the NHS is put under ever greater strain. Sadly, some people’s lives will be shortened by Coronavirus, so the need for end of life care will be greater. Marie Curie can meet this need, and in doing so will help free up intensive care beds needed for Coronavirus patients. But just as we want to help, our income has been decimated. We need donations urgently to keep our Nurses and Hospice staff on the frontline. Please donate now. The temporary closure of our studios and cancellation of classes is causing substantial loss of income for us. By donating to our campaign you will be helping ensure our survival so that we can continue to provide practical classes for members of the public and affordable workspace for Bath's creative artists. How the funding will be spent Your donation will assist Bath Artists' Studios in meeting the costs of continuing to run and maintain our premises whilst it is closed to the public and our member artists. How this will benefit the community By helping us to meet with the costs of maintaining and running the organisation you will help us to ensure we can continue to provide our programme of classes and events set within a working creative environment once the current crisis has abated. If you have any other questions please contact us by emailing: info@lifeprojectbath.org.uk We now face the very real concern that we will not be able to continue supporting the 2,500 vulnerable families that we currently help. Families with children undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant patients and others with compromised immune systems. We receive no government funding for the vital care we provide and rely almost entirely on the generosity of the public. Many people may be unable to support financially at this time but, if you can, I urge you to show your support to our key workers on the front line and donate today. Your donation is needed now, more than ever. If you are unable to give, but still want to show your support, I also urge you to follow us on social media and share our stories far and wide. Thank you for taking action and joining our fight for families in need. If you value art, creativity and culture as much as we do please support us. While we are closed we are doing all we can to keep in touch with our community through creative online activities for everyone - something that will become increasingly important as social isolation expands and deepens. We love keeping in touch with you all, and our belief in and our commitment to art and wellbeing has never felt more important. Please donate whatever you feel you can. Take care and thank you. Chris Stephens and the Holburne team x At this difficult time, we need to be closer than ever. The Bath Community Shop is a remarkable, impressive not-for-profit organisation, serving Twerton and the surrounding area – and it is struggling to survive. Week in, week out, it provides very low-cost clothes, shoes, toys, books, household equipment and small items of furniture to some of the most underprivileged and most needing people in our city. Particularly in current times. It acts as a support hub for the community. It needs donations – always. But it needs money right now so that it can continue. With no voluntary fundraising able to be undertaken, the smaller Charities need assistance! I volunteer for www.veteranscharity.org.uk which is still helping struggling Veterans of HM Forces facing hardship, but their welfare requests have increased 75% on this time last year!
