Friends Of Bathampton Meadows Riverside Brief Description of Organisation Friends of Bathampton Meadows Riverside was formed to maintain the beautiful riverside space at Bathampton Meadows for its wildlife and visitors. Visit Website Full Description of Organisation Friends of Bathampton Meadows Riverside was formed to maintain the beautiful riverside space at Bathampton Meadows for its wildlife and visitors. In 2014, Bath and North East Somerset Council installed a cycle path along the riverside of Bathampton Meadows. However, no plan or budget was put in place to maintain the space. Realising the potential of the space, a Volunteer Group was formed and started to implement some key maintenance tasks. The ‘Friends’ was born out of this volunteer group. As Peter Fear, a member of the group, explained: “Momentum was picking up and the Volunteers decided to formalise themselves into a Friends group with a bank account and begin fundraising. We had very little experience with fundraising and the opportunity to join Localgiving arose at the time we were considering how to raise funds. Localgiving was a perfect solution”. In the absence of any funding from our Local Authority, the Friends are aiming to raise around £1,000 each year to ensure the beautiful riverside space is maintained for the benefit of the local community and the local wildlife. During 2016, the volunteers contributed over 500 hours. Plans for the future include ongoing maintenance, ecological surveys (open to the public), planting of trees and shrubs, creating areas for wildflowers, creation of a wetland and improvements to the hedgerows. The constant reports of record temperatures, wildfires, floods and droughts in the world today tell us that climate change is happening now. We are living with ever faster change, both technological and biological. We will need to draw on our incredible human capacity for creativity, resilience and cooperation to meet challenges ahead. Compassion and self awareness are at the heart of finding our courage to create our best future. Increasingly we as a species are divorced from the environment in which we spent hundreds of thousands of years evolving. Mental health problems and chronic illness are highest in technologically developed countries. Peer reviewed research studies prove the link between access to natural environment and wellbeing in all its measures; including better physical health, lower crime, less domestic violence, less need for pain relief post surgery, optimised mental health. Previous Job Next Job The Park Access Traineeship will be essential in the success of the first year of our park accessibility project. In 2021, we commissioned research to understand the experiences of unpaid carers and disabled people when trying to spend time in Bristol and Bath’s parks. The report found that participants were passionate about spending time in parks for their wellbeing, but they had to overcome multiple, demoralising barriers. Many had given going to the park as so many trips were unsuccessful. We are using our close relationship with Bristol City Council and Bath and North East Somerset Council, as well as other of disabled people and carers organisations, to action the recommendations in the report to improve accessibility of Bristol and Bath’s parks. This role will provide support to the team from the very beginning of the project. You will help us improve our understanding of disabled people and unpaid carers needs by consulting and collaborating as we develop the project further. This will involve drafting surveys, holding 1-2-1 conversations, running feedback groups and ensuring all information gathered feeds into the project. < All Jobs Park Access Trainee Salary: £10.90/ hour Hours: 35 hours per week Contract Type: 12 Months, Fixed term Location: Bristol or Bath Close Date: Friday, 11 November 2022 Email Contact: charlee@yourpark.org.uk < All Jobs Previous Job Next Job Apply for Job
